Nowadays, in criminal cases to find the defendant ‘guilty’ the magistrates, judge, or jury must be sure that the defendant is guilty. This is sometimes described as ‘sure beyond a reasonable doubt’ or ‘satisfied so that they are sure’. See: https://www.cps.gov.uk/about-cps/how-a-criminal-case-works. Clarification: US criminal cases are The State/The United States/The people against… (not the Crown).
