| Appellant (noun) | A person or entity who appeals a court decision. | The appellant was not satisfied with the decision at first instance. |
| Appellate (adjective) | Relating to appeals. | The case was heard at the appellate stage. |
| Claim (noun) | A legal assertion or demand for compensation, payment, or reimbursement for a loss. | The employee is bringing a claim against his employer. |
| Claimant (noun) | An individual, company, or institution making a claim in court. (Previously called “plaintiff” before 1999; still used in the U.S.) | The claimant is seeking compensation for damage to his property. |
| Costs (noun) | Legal expenses payable, often by the losing party. | The defendant was ordered to pay costs. |
| Damage (noun) | Harm or loss that may justify legal action. | The article caused damage to his reputation. |

| Personal injury (noun) | Physical or mental harm caused due to another’s fault. | The employee suffered personal injury at work due to lack of health and safety compliance. |
| Plaintiff (noun) | The old term (pre-1999) for a claimant; still used in the U.S. | The plaintiff claimed that the defendant had breached the contract. |
| Remedy (noun) | A legal solution provided to compensate or correct a wrong (e.g. damages, injunction). | A remedy was not awarded due to unreasonable behaviour. |
| Respondent (noun) | The party responding to an appeal or application. | The notice of appeal was served on the respondent. |
| To assert (verb) | To make a statement or claim of fact or belief. | The claimant asserted that the defendant had caused damage to his property. |
| Tort (noun) | An area of law dealing with wrongful acts causing harm or loss. | The number of tort cases involving personal injury has risen. |
