Update (2026):
Since this episode was recorded, there has been a change of monarch. References in this episode to Queen Elizabeth II as the current monarch should now be understood historically. As of 2026, the current monarch is King Charles III, so new Acts of Parliament now receive royal assent from the King, and the enacting formula in new legislation refers to the King rather than the Queen. The explanation of how to read an Act of Parliament, including sections, subsections, paragraphs, sub-paragraphs, schedules and explanatory notes, remains accurate.
