| Vocabulary | Definition | Example |
| Bar table (noun) | The table or area in court where advocates or lawyers sit. This term is especially common in traditional common law courtrooms. | The defendant is not permitted to sit at the bar table. |
| Bench (noun) | 1) The seat of judges or magistrates in court, usually elevated. 2) A group of judges or magistrates sitting together. 3) Judges collectively. | The bench is at the front of the courtroom. |
| Legal adviser (noun) | A legally qualified court officer who advises magistrates on law and procedure and assists with court proceedings. “Legal adviser” is now the preferred modern term, although “court clerk” or “justices’ clerk” may still occasionally be heard. | The magistrates requested the legal adviser’s assistance with a question of law. |
| Press (noun) | Journalists and media organisations that report news and court proceedings. | The press watched the trial and reported the proceedings. |
