Review vocabulary:
| Vocabulary | Definition | Example |
| Alibi (noun) | A defence asserting that the defendant was elsewhere when the offence was allegedly committed. | The mother was accused of giving a false alibi for her son. |
| Allegation (noun) | A claim that someone has done something illegal or wrong which has not yet been proven. | The allegations against my client must be proven in court. |
| Case (noun) | Legal proceedings generally, or the facts and arguments presented by a party. | The case will be heard on Friday. |
| Defence statement / statement of defence (noun) | (Criminal proceedings) A written statement served by the defendant on the prosecutor and the court setting out the nature of the defence and the matters disputed. “Defence statement” is the more common modern criminal procedure term. | The allegations are denied in the defence statement. |
| Duty of disclosure (noun) | (Criminal proceedings) The obligation to disclose relevant material in accordance with disclosure rules. In England and Wales, the prosecution’s disclosure duties are much broader than the defendant’s. | The prosecution has a duty to disclose information relevant to the investigation. |
| To seize (verb) | To take possession of something using legal authority. | The police raided the defendant’s house and seized property. |
| To withhold (verb) | To refuse to give or disclose something. | The prosecutor withheld vital information. |
| Vigilant (adjective) | Careful to notice problems, dangers, or errors. | We need to be more vigilant in checking for errors in our contracts. |
