Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy

Find out about rights and obligations regarding this website.

Effective date: 1 September 2026

This page contains:

  • Terms and Conditions, which governs use of the Study Legal English website and the purchase and use of its courses, tests, memberships and Speaking Club; and
  • Privacy Policy, which explains how personal data is collected and used.

Please read the relevant parts carefully before using the website or making a purchase.

Terms and Conditions

1. Who we are

Study Legal English is the trading name of Louise Kulbicki, an individual business registered in Lecco, Italy, providing foreign-language courses under ATECO code 85.59.10 — Corsi di lingua straniera.

Business address: Via Leoncavallo 11A, 23900 Lecco, Italy
Partita IVA: 04015780135
Email: louise@studylegalenglish.com
Website: https://studylegalenglish.com

In these Terms, “Study Legal English”, “we”, “us” and “our” refer to Louise Kulbicki trading as Study Legal English. “You” and “your” refer to the person using the website or purchasing a Service.

2. About these Terms

These Terms apply to:

  • use of the Study Legal English website;
  • self-paced online courses;
  • the free English level test;
  • the paid Legal English level test;
  • Podcast LITE and Podcast PRO Membership;
  • the live online Speaking Club; and
  • free downloads and other materials made available through the website.

Private lessons and bespoke training are not governed by the purchasing provisions in these Terms. If you enquire about those services, you will receive separate terms before booking.

The description, price, access period and any particular requirements shown on the relevant product or course page form part of your contract with us. If a course page contains a specific term that conflicts with a general description in these Terms, the specific course-page term applies to that course, except where it would reduce a mandatory consumer right.

By placing an order, you confirm that you have read and accepted the version of these Terms displayed at checkout. The Privacy Policy in Part B is provided for information about the processing of your personal data; acceptance of the Terms does not constitute consent to optional marketing or non-essential cookies.

3. Eligibility and individual use

Our Services are intended only for people aged 18 or over. By creating an account, taking a test or making a purchase, you confirm that you are at least 18.

Services offered through the website may be purchased by individuals for their own use. Unless we expressly agree otherwise in writing, purchases are not multi-user, institutional or corporate licences.

You may purchase our Services from outside Italy. Mandatory consumer protections that apply in the country where you habitually live are not excluded by these Terms.

4. Accounts

Some Services, including the level tests and paid courses, require a Study Legal English account. You must provide accurate information and keep it reasonably up to date.

An account is personal to one named user. You must:

  • keep your password and login details confidential;
  • not allow anyone else to access paid content through your account;
  • notify us promptly if you believe your account has been accessed without permission; and
  • comply with applicable law when using the website.

We may ask you to reset a password or take other reasonable security steps. To request deletion of your account, email louise@studylegalenglish.com. Some transaction records may still need to be retained for legal, tax or dispute-resolution purposes, as explained in Part B.

5. Self-paced online courses

5.1 What the courses include

Our ordinary online courses are self-paced and primarily consist of pre-recorded and digital learning content. The exact syllabus, materials and features are described on each course page.

Unless a course page clearly states otherwise:

  • access begins immediately after successful payment;
  • access lasts for one year from the purchase date;
  • the course is for one named learner;
  • the learner may complete the course at their own pace during the access period;
  • the learner may post designated written activities and receive individual feedback from Study Legal English within a reasonable time; and
  • a course certificate is available when the stated completion requirements have been met.

The written-feedback element is asynchronous. It is not a scheduled live lesson and does not guarantee an immediate response or responses outside the activities designated for feedback.

Certificates issued by Study Legal English confirm completion or a result within our educational programme. They are not degrees, professional licences or regulated qualifications unless a course page expressly states otherwise.

5.2 Access and technical requirements

You are responsible for having a compatible device, a supported browser, internet access and any software identified on the course page. We are not responsible for interruptions caused by your equipment, software, internet connection or failure to keep your contact details current.

We may carry out maintenance, security work and reasonable technical or presentational updates. We will not materially remove the content or benefits purchased during your access period. If we permanently cannot provide a material part of a paid Service, your statutory remedies and the remedies in section 14 apply.

5.3 Course completion

You must complete the course and download any permitted materials before your access period ends. Access does not pause merely because you do not use the course. We may agree to an extension at our discretion, but are not obliged to do so unless required by law.

6. English and Legal English level tests

6.1 Free English level test

The free English level test is an automated online educational assessment. Taking it requires an email address and creates a free Study Legal English account. Your result is provided immediately and you may receive a certificate.

Creating an account or taking the test does not subscribe you to marketing. Marketing is sent only if you separately opt in.

6.2 Paid Legal English level test

The paid Legal English level test is an automated online assessment. Access normally begins immediately after successful payment. The result and certificate are generated immediately after completion.

The test does not include a live appointment, individual marking or a printed certificate. The price and any further details are shown on the test page before purchase.

6.3 Meaning and limitations of results

Both tests provide informal educational indications of language level. Results depend on the answers supplied and the scope and design of the test. They are not accredited qualifications, professional certifications, immigration evidence or guarantees of performance in employment, education, legal practice or another examination.

You must complete a test yourself and must not obtain unauthorised assistance, copy questions or share test content.

7. Podcast LITE and Podcast PRO Membership

7.1 General

Podcast LITE and Podcast PRO are archive-based educational memberships sold as a one-off purchase for one year. They do not renew automatically.

The name “Podcast” refers to an archive of previously published Study Legal English Podcast materials. Study Legal English no longer publishes the Study Legal English Podcast and now publishes public video content through the Study Legal English YouTube channel.

Membership access begins immediately after successful payment and expires one year later. Membership is personal to one named user.

7.2 Membership content

The membership and course pages explain the exact benefits and how to access the relevant materials. The benefits form part of the membership purchased and will not be materially removed during the one-year access period. We may make non-material corrections, accessibility improvements, security changes and technical updates.

8. Speaking Club

8.1 What you are booking

The Speaking Club consists of live, online group Legal English speaking classes held through Zoom. Each class lasts approximately 60 minutes, focuses on a particular theme and is guided by a trainer. Classes may be delivered by Louise Kulbicki, another qualified Legal English trainer, or both.

Speaking Club places are sold as a class pack for fixed dates. Classes cannot be rescheduled at a participant’s request. The class page describes the dates, pack, level and included preparation.

Classes are intended for learners at CEFR B1 level or above. You are responsible for assessing your suitability before booking. You may use the free English level test as a guide, but it is not a formal admission assessment.

8.2 Technical requirements and attendance

You need a stable internet connection, working microphone, compatible device and access to Zoom. We do not provide a refund, replacement class or credit where you miss a class or cannot participate because of your hardware, software, network, availability or other circumstances on your side, subject always to mandatory consumer rights.

Speaking Club classes are not recorded by Study Legal English. You must not record, photograph, transcribe or distribute a class without our prior written permission and the consent of everyone affected.

8.3 Materials

Preparatory materials may include vocabulary lists, pre-class notes and other learning content. You may access these until the end of the relevant course or class-pack period and use them only as permitted under section 10.

8.4 If we cancel or reschedule

If we cancel or move a class, you may attend on the replacement date or receive a refund for the affected class. This does not automatically cancel the rest of a pack unless the change materially affects the pack as a whole.

9. Prices and payment

The price payable is the price displayed at checkout when you order. Prices include VAT where VAT is applicable. No wording in these Terms determines the tax treatment of a transaction.

Payments are processed through Stripe or PayPal, according to the payment options presented at checkout. Those providers process payment information under their own terms and privacy notices. We normally do not receive your complete payment-card details.

An order is accepted when payment succeeds and we provide an order confirmation or access to the Service. If a price or product description contains an obvious error, we may contact you to correct or cancel the order and provide a full refund.

10. Intellectual property and permitted use

Unless expressly stated otherwise, Study Legal English owns or licenses the copyright and other intellectual-property rights in the website, courses, tests, recordings, PDFs, questions, lesson plans, graphics and other materials.

Your purchase gives you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to access and use the relevant materials for your own study during the stated access period. You may download or print materials only where the website makes that function available.

You must not, without prior written permission:

  • share your login or allow another person to access paid content;
  • copy, reproduce, republish, sell, sublicense or distribute materials;
  • upload materials to a public or private server, learning platform, shared drive or artificial-intelligence system;
  • remove copyright notices;
  • reproduce or share test questions or answers;
  • use automated tools to scrape, harvest or systematically download content; or
  • use the materials to create a competing product or service.

Teacher use

A teacher with a valid individual account may display course or membership content by sharing their own screen during a class they personally teach. This does not permit the teacher to distribute files, give students account access, upload materials to a class platform or reproduce materials in handouts.

For any teacher use beyond screen-sharing, you must request and obtain written permission from louise@studylegalenglish.com.

11. Your cancellation and withdrawal rights

11.1 Statutory 14-day withdrawal period

If you are a consumer, Articles 52 and following of the Italian Consumer Code (Legislative Decree No. 206/2005) generally give you 14 days to withdraw from a distance contract without giving a reason. The period normally begins on the day the contract is concluded.

To withdraw, email louise@studylegalenglish.com before the period expires and clearly identify the purchase.

Where a valid withdrawal applies, we will reimburse amounts due without undue delay and no later than 14 days after being informed of your decision, using the original payment method unless otherwise agreed.

11.2 Immediate digital access

Courses, memberships and tests normally begin immediately. Before immediate supply of digital content that is not supplied on a physical medium, we will ask you to:

  1. expressly request and consent to immediate supply during the 14-day period; and
  2. acknowledge that you will lose your withdrawal right when supply begins, where Article 59 of the Italian Consumer Code permits this.

If a purchased element is legally treated as a service rather than digital content, we will apply the Consumer Code rules for services. Where you expressly request that the service begin during the withdrawal period and then withdraw before it is fully performed, you may be required to pay a proportionate amount for the service already supplied. The right is lost after full performance only where the legal requirements for that loss have been met.

After immediate digital supply has begun with the required consent and acknowledgement, we do not provide change-of-mind refunds for courses, memberships or paid tests. We may grant a refund at our discretion, but doing so does not create an entitlement in other cases.

This section does not limit your rights where digital content or a digital service is faulty, inaccessible or not as described.

11.3 Speaking Club

If a Speaking Club class or pack is due to begin during the 14-day withdrawal period, we will ask you to request performance during that period. If you withdraw after one or more classes have been supplied, we may retain or charge the proportionate price of those classes in accordance with Article 57 of the Italian Consumer Code.

Once the 14-day period has ended, unused classes are non-refundable. A class that has taken place is non-refundable whether or not you attended, subject to section 8.4 and mandatory law. Missed classes cannot be rescheduled or exchanged for credit.

12. Availability, conformity and support

We take reasonable care to provide Services that correspond to their descriptions and function as reasonably expected. If you experience an access or technical problem, contact louise@studylegalenglish.com with sufficient details for us to investigate.

We may temporarily suspend access for essential maintenance, security, suspected misuse or events outside our reasonable control. We will use reasonable efforts to restore access and minimise material disruption.

13. Suspension and termination

We may suspend or terminate an account where we reasonably believe that you have materially breached these Terms, shared access, infringed intellectual property, compromised security, behaved unlawfully or abused another participant.

Except where urgent action is reasonably necessary, we will explain the reason and give you a reasonable opportunity to address a remediable breach. Suspension or termination does not remove rights that cannot lawfully be excluded. Where termination results from your material breach, a refund is not normally due for the affected Service.

You may stop using your account at any time and request its deletion, but account deletion does not itself create a refund right.

14. Educational disclaimer and liability

Study Legal English provides English-language education and study resources. It does not provide legal advice, legal representation, certified translation or a guarantee that particular wording is suitable for a transaction or jurisdiction.

Laws and language use change. You should check current authoritative sources and obtain appropriate legal or linguistic advice before relying on course content in professional work.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability where exclusion or limitation is prohibited by law, including liability for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, death or personal injury caused by negligence, gross negligence or wilful misconduct, or mandatory consumer rights.

Subject to those protections, we are not liable for losses that were not reasonably foreseeable when the contract was made, losses caused by your equipment or connection, or business losses arising from a consumer purchase. Where legally permitted, our total liability arising from a particular paid Service will not exceed the amount you paid for that Service.

15. Third-party services and links

The website and Services may use or link to third-party platforms, including payment, video, learning, file-hosting and social-media services. Third parties operate under their own terms and privacy notices. We are not responsible for unrelated third-party content or services that we do not control.

Some links are affiliate links. If you make a purchase through one, Study Legal English may receive a commission at no additional cost to you. The presence of an affiliate link does not remove your responsibility to decide whether a third-party product is suitable for you.

16. Comments and community conduct

The website may allow comments without requiring an account. You remain responsible for what you post and must not submit content that is unlawful, defamatory, discriminatory, threatening, infringing, deceptive, promotional, irrelevant, invasive of privacy or harmful to the website or another person.

You retain ownership of your comment, but give us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, reproduce and display it as necessary to operate and moderate the comment area. This does not permit us to use your comment as a named testimonial in advertising without separate permission.

We may moderate, edit for technical reasons, hide or remove comments that breach these Terms or are reasonably considered spam, unsafe or irrelevant.

17. Changes to Services and these Terms

We may update these Terms to reflect changes in law, technology or our Services. Changes will not retrospectively reduce the material benefits of a purchase already made. The version presented when you order governs that purchase, together with any later change that you expressly accept or that is required by mandatory law.

We may change or discontinue free website features at any time. Material changes affecting personal data are handled as explained in Part B.

18. Governing law and disputes

These Terms and contracts made under them are governed by Italian law.

If you are a consumer, you retain mandatory protections under the law of the country in which you habitually reside. You may bring proceedings in the competent courts available to you under applicable consumer law. Nothing in these Terms requires a consumer to litigate exclusively in Lecco where such a requirement would be unlawful.

For disputes that are not consumer disputes, the courts of Lecco, Italy, have exclusive jurisdiction to the extent permitted by law.

Please contact louise@studylegalenglish.com first so that we can try to resolve a complaint. A consumer may also have access to an applicable consumer alternative dispute resolution body. Participation is not promised or required unless applicable law says otherwise.

We process personal data under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Italian Personal Data Protection Code (Legislative Decree No. 196/2003, as amended) and other applicable data-protection and electronic-communications rules.

21. Personal data we collect

Depending on how you use the website, we may collect:

  • identity and contact data, such as your name, email address, username, billing address and country;
  • account data, such as your login information, account status and preferences;
  • purchase and transaction data, such as products purchased, price, payment status, invoice information and limited payment metadata;
  • course data, such as enrolment, progress, quiz answers, written activities, feedback, completion and certificates;
  • test data, including test answers, scores, level results and certificates;
  • Speaking Club data, such as bookings, attendance and participation information;
  • communications, including contact enquiries, support requests and correspondence;
  • comment data, such as the name, email address, comment, IP address and anti-spam information submitted through a comment form;
  • marketing data, such as newsletter subscription, consent and unsubscribe records;
  • technical and usage data, such as IP address, browser, device, login events, pages viewed, referrals, cookie identifiers and interactions with the website or advertisements; and
  • content you voluntarily submit, including written course activities.

We do not intentionally request special-category data, such as health, biometric, religious or political information. Please do not include confidential client information, special-category data or information about identifiable third parties in comments, course activities or messages unless it is genuinely necessary and lawful to do so.

Stripe and PayPal collect and process full payment credentials. We generally receive confirmation, transaction identifiers and limited billing information rather than complete card details.

22. When we collect data

We collect personal data when you:

  • browse or interact with the website;
  • accept or configure cookies;
  • create an account;
  • take a free or paid test;
  • purchase or use a course, membership or Speaking Club pack;
  • submit written work or request feedback;
  • download a free resource;
  • subscribe to or unsubscribe from marketing;

  • contact us.

We may also receive transaction and technical information from the service providers listed below.

Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw consent at any time. Withdrawal does not affect processing that was lawful before withdrawal. Where we rely on legitimate interests, we balance those interests against your rights and reasonable expectations.

24. Automated test scoring

The English and Legal English level tests score answers automatically and generate a result or certificate without individual human marking. This automation provides an informal educational assessment only. It does not produce legal or similarly significant effects, determine access to employment or education, or make a decision about your legal rights.

If you believe a result was affected by a technical error, contact us. This does not guarantee a different score or individual re-marking where the test is described as fully automated.

25. Marketing

We send marketing only where you have separately opted in or another lawful basis clearly applies. Purchasing a Service, creating an account or taking a test does not by itself subscribe you to marketing.

We use Substack to manage and send newsletters. Information submitted through our newsletter sign-up is provided to Substack for that purpose. You can unsubscribe using the link in any marketing email or by contacting us.

We may still send essential non-marketing messages about purchases, access, security, changes to a Service or responses to your enquiries.

26. Cookies and similar technologies

We use cookies and similar technologies for functions such as account login, checkout, security, preferences, analytics, embedded content and advertising.

26.1 Essential cookies

Essential cookies support functions requested by you, such as signing in, remembering a shopping basket, processing checkout, maintaining security and recording cookie choices. They do not require consent where applicable law treats them as strictly necessary, but we provide information about them.

26.2 Analytics, advertising and embedded-content cookies

We use services including Google Analytics, Google Ads, YouTube embeds and reCAPTCHA. Depending on their configuration, these services may read or place cookies or similar identifiers and process device, browsing or interaction data.

Non-essential analytics, advertising and profiling technologies are blocked until you consent through our Complianz cookie banner. You can accept, reject or manage categories. Refusing non-essential cookies does not prevent ordinary access to the website, although optional embedded features may not function until enabled.

You may change or withdraw your choice at any time through the cookie settings link displayed on the website. The Complianz cookie declaration provides the current cookie names, providers, purposes and durations. Because website technologies change more often than this general policy, that live declaration forms part of this Privacy Policy.

Google Search Console provides aggregated information about how the website appears in search results and does not by itself authorise us to place non-essential cookies without consent.

27. Service providers and recipients

We use selected providers to operate the website and deliver Services. Depending on your use, personal data may be processed by:

  • WordPress and WooCommerce — website, accounts, content and checkout;
  • LearnDash — course enrolment, progress, activities and certificates;
  • SiteGround — website hosting, storage, security and backups with data centre in Europe;
  • Stripe and PayPal — payment processing and fraud prevention;
  • Substack — newsletter subscriptions and marketing emails;
  • Google Analytics and Google Search Console — consent-based analytics and search-performance information;
  • Google Ads — consent-based advertising and measurement;
  • YouTube — embedded video content;
  • Zoom — live Speaking Club classes;
  • Quizlet — interactive study activities;
  • Microsoft OneDrive — storage or delivery of relevant archived membership content;
  • reCAPTCHA — spam and abuse prevention; and
  • CookieYes — cookie-consent management and consent records.

These providers receive only the data reasonably required for their function. Some act as processors on our instructions; others, particularly payment or platform providers, may act as independent controllers for parts of their processing.

We may also disclose data to professional advisers, public authorities, courts, tax authorities or law-enforcement bodies where reasonably necessary or legally required. We do not sell your personal data.

28. International data transfers

Some providers, including Google, YouTube, Stripe, PayPal, Substack, Zoom, Microsoft and other technology providers, may process data in the United States or other countries outside the European Economic Area.

Where GDPR rules on international transfers apply, transfers must use a lawful mechanism, such as an adequacy decision—including an applicable certification under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework—or European Commission Standard Contractual Clauses, together with supplementary measures where required. Further information is available in the relevant provider’s privacy notice.

29. How long we keep data

We apply the following periods unless a longer period is required by law, a shorter period is appropriate, or data is needed for an existing dispute:

  • purchase, invoice, payment and contractual records: 10 years from the relevant transaction or final accounting entry, in accordance with applicable Italian accounting and tax obligations, including Article 2220 of the Italian Civil Code where applicable;
  • course accounts, progress, activities, feedback and certificates: for the access period and normally up to 24 months afterwards for support and dispute management;
  • free and paid test answers, scores and certificates: normally 24 months;
  • contact enquiries and support correspondence: normally up to 24 months after the last substantive communication;
  • newsletter subscription data: until you unsubscribe or withdraw consent, with a minimal suppression record retained where necessary to honour that choice;
  • consent and withdrawal records: for as long as reasonably necessary to demonstrate compliance and address potential claims;
  • cookie, advertising and analytics data: for the periods identified in the Complianz cookie settings, with marketing or profiling data normally limited to no more than 12 months unless a shorter period applies; and
  • comments: while the comment remains published or until removal is justified or requested, with moderation records retained for as long as reasonably necessary.

If a complaint, legal claim or investigation exists, relevant information may be retained until it and the applicable limitation periods have ended. When data is no longer required, it is deleted or irreversibly anonymised.

Deleting an account does not require deletion of records that we must retain by law or need for the establishment, exercise or defence of legal claims.

30. Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures designed to protect personal data, including access controls, secure connections, reputable hosting and backups. No internet or storage system is completely secure, so absolute security cannot be guaranteed.

If a personal-data breach occurs, we will assess it and notify the Italian supervisory authority and affected individuals where required by Articles 33 and 34 GDPR.

31. Your data-protection rights

Subject to the conditions and exceptions in applicable law, you may have the right to:

  • obtain information about and access your personal data;
  • correct inaccurate or incomplete data;
  • request deletion;
  • restrict processing;
  • object to processing based on legitimate interests or to direct marketing;
  • receive certain data in a portable format;
  • withdraw consent at any time; and
  • complain to a supervisory authority.

To exercise a right, email louise@studylegalenglish.com. We may ask for reasonable information to verify your identity. We normally respond within one month, subject to any lawful extension under GDPR.

You may complain to the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali, the Italian data-protection authority: https://www.garanteprivacy.it. If you live elsewhere in the EEA, you may also be entitled to contact the supervisory authority in your country.

32. Other websites and embedded services

Our website contains links to and embeds from third-party websites. When you choose to interact with a third-party service, that provider may collect data under its own privacy policy. We do not control unrelated third-party processing.

33. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy when our practices, providers or legal obligations change. We will publish the revised version with a new effective date. If a change materially affects how we use data already collected, we will provide additional notice or obtain consent where required.

34. Privacy contact
