About CAJA

What is CAJA?


CAJA stands for “Communiquer en anglais juridique des affaires » (Communicating in Business Legal English). It was created and is administered by Linguaid, which also offers tailor-made Legal English training provided by coaches who are former lawyers in their countries of origin.

What skills does this certification assess?


This certification assesses the ability of in-house and private practice lawyers to produce oral
and written communication appropriate to common professional situations, with the level of
grammatical and linguistic accuracy expected in the legal field and their practice area.

Who can take the certification?


The certification is open to lawyers in private practice, in-house counsel, and other legal
professionals. CAJA is a registered certifying program listed under RS6810 in the Répertoire
Spécifique of France Compétences. Anyone with a Personal Training Account (CPF) in France can
access it and, depending on their available CPF budget, fund all or part of the training and
certification.

What is the format of the certification?


Total duration: 90 minutes
Structure:

  • 3 role-plays conducted by videoconference, then
  • 3 written activities completed remotely on our platform

Oral assessments (live with an evaluator)

  • Scenario 1 (10 minutes): Initiate contact and introduce yourself to a foreign colleague in an international context (scenario provided in advance – oral exchange)
  • Scenario 2 (in two continuous parts, 30 minutes total ):
  1. Conduct an initial interview with a client or colleague regarding a potential dispute (scenario
    provided in advance – oral exchange).
  2. Provide legal advice and/or information outlining different options, strategies or actions
    available. (scenario provided in advance – oral exchange)
  • Scenario 3 (15 minutes): Negotiate two contractual clauses (scenario provided in advance –
    oral exchange)

Written assessments (on the certifier’s platform)

  • Case 1: Letter to a client (10 minutes – multiple choice)
  • Case 2: Letter to a colleague (10 minutes – fill-in-the-blank)
  • Case 3: Excerpt from three contractual provisions (10 minutes – Replace the underlined Chat
    GPT errors with appropriate legal term(s) by typing in response)

What are the evaluation criteria?


Criteria are detailed for each assessment. They focus primarily on clarity, accuracy, linguistic
relevance, and use of professional register appropriate to legal practice.
