What is this course about?

Confused about barristers, solicitors, and attorneys? This course introduces the key legal professions in the English Legal System including barristers and solicitors, helping you understand their roles. It aims to improve your legal English skills, enabling you to communicate confidently about legal professions so that you can confidently explain your own work.

What will I learn?

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify and describe key legal professions in England and their roles within the legal system.
  • Explain the differences between barristers and solicitors, including their duties, rights of audience, and career pathways.
  • Confidently discuss your professional experience or career goals within a legal context using clear and accurate legal English.

What is the course structure?

The course is divided into two main modules where you will learn about barristers, solicitors, and then other legal professionals.

Each module includes interactive lessons, listening activities, vocabulary practice, and skills-based review (reading, writing, speaking, and listening).

Who is this course for?

This course is for people learning legal English. It is perfect for non-native legal professionals, law students, translators, judges, and paralegals. It is particularly useful if you are:

  • confused about the differences between barristers, lawyers, solicitors, and attorneys and do not know how to describe what you do;
  • an international student interested in or currently studying an LLB Law degree or LLM Masters in law in England;
  • preparing for one of the Test of Legal English Skills (TOLES) exam and looking for supplementary study material.

What type of legal English does this course teach?

This course primarily uses legal English from the jurisdiction of England and Wales although some references may be made to legal English from other jurisdictions such as the USA.
