Word of the Week: Gavel (noun)

Definition: A small wooden hammer which is banged on a desk to gain attention and call people to order. Gavels are often associated with the law. In the case of England this is incorrect as gavels not used in English courtrooms.

Example: The student was surprised not to see a gavel in the courtroom.
